BASCOM, Ohio-- An autopsy was performed today on a man who died after he was found injured while mushroom hunting.

Kyle Tanner, 24, of Fostoria died Saturday at Mercy Tiffin Hospital after he was taken there following what authorities believe was a “freak accident,” said Sgt. Kevin Reinbolt, of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Tanner and a friend were hunting mushrooms on private property near the corner of U.S. 224 and County Road 7 in Hopewell Township, roughly two miles south of Bascom. Sergeant Reinbolt said the two separated while searching for mushrooms, and Mr. Tanner’s friend later found him with a head injury.

Authorities said Mr. Tanner could have fallen and hit his head or been struck by a falling tree limb. His body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, which did an autopsy today.

Sergeant Reinbolt said there appears to be “nothing suspicious” about the incident. Seneca County Coroner Mark Akers could not be reached for comment.
