A man was fatally shot at a residence on South River Road in Waterville Township early today, authorities said. His identity as homeowner James Safadi, 34, was confirmed by Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp.
H.R. Kellett, the acting Waterville Township police chief, described the incident as a home invasion.
Mr. Safadi's girlfriend, who locked herself in a bathroom of the home, called 911, said Jeff Kozak, a detective with the Lucas County Sheriff's Office who said the incident did not appear to be random. Authorities, he said, are searching for three suspects, described as black men who were dressed in black and wearing masks.
Authorities remain on scene where they're investigating.
Family members of the victim, who have gathered outside of the home, have declined to comment.
The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. at 8940 South River Rd., sheriff deputies said. The motive in the shooting was not released. Detective Kozak confirmed Mr. Safadi and his family own a couple of carry-out stores in the Toledo area.
The Lucas County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation.
