Fire of undetermined origin caused between $55,000 and $70,000 damage to a home in Maumee early today.

City fire Chief Richard Monto said firefighters were dispatched at 4:16 a.m. to 1102 Rosedale St., which is near the Ohio Turnpike at the city's northern boundary. The blaze originated in the basement in an area the chief described as a workshop. The fire was under control about 15 minutes later, but firefighters were on the scene involved in cleanup into the late morning.

He declined to identify the mother and two sons who occupy the home, saying only the sons are high-school age and one of them has a bedroom in the basement.

It was the latter son who was awakened by crackling sounds from the fire, the chief said. He alerted his mother and brother, and all escaped safely. Chief Monto said the bulk of the damage to the home was to the joists supporting the main floor of the single-story structure, as well as smoke damage throughout the home.
