FREMONT -- A Fremont man accidentally ran over and killed his 22-month-old son Saturday evening when the toddler strayed in front of his vehicle as he was moving it, city police reported.

Juan M. Patino, 23, was leaving the residence at 625 S. Front St. in a sport-utility vehicle when he struck the boy, Juliano M. Stockman-Patino, in the parking lot at 9:04 p.m., Police Chief Timothy Wiersma said in a statement. The boy had "wandered into the path of the vehicle as it was pulling away," the chief said.

No charges were immediately filed, and a continuing investigation is to include an autopsy performed by the Lucas County Coroner's Office.
