A unidentified driver died late Monday afternoon when his car crossed Airport Highway's center line in Swanton Township and collided head-on with a tractor trailer, the Ohio Highway Patrol reported.

Troopers at the patrol's Toledo post said the driver, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was declared dead at the scene of the 5:39 p.m. crash near Scott Road. Truck driver Robert Bruce Petrovich, Jr., 44, of Colville, Wash., was treated for minor injuries at the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly Medical College of Ohio Hospital, according to the report.

The car was headed west, while the semi was in the eastbound left lane slowing before a left turn into a driveway, troopers said. Mr. Petrovich wore a seat belt but the car driver did not, they said.

After a separate crash two hours earlier near Cygnet, Ohio, troopers at the patrol's Bowling Green post reported serious injuries to two drivers.

A sport-utility truck driven by James R. Giles, 74, of Carey, Ohio, southbound on State Rt. 25 went into a roadside ditch, then re-entered the roadway and went airborne onto Cygnet Road, striking an eastbound car driven by Reed J. Langton, 30, of Monroe, troopers said.

Mr. Giles was taken to Wood County Hospital, while Mr. Langton was flown to UTMC. Both drivers had worn seat belts but had to be extricated from their vehicles, according to the report.
