Fire caused an estimated $14,000 damage to a two-story duplex in South Toledo on Saturday, displacing five residents, according to Dennis Facer, a battalion fire chief.

Firefighters arriving at 541 Crittenden Ave. about 4 p.m. saw flames shooting from first-floor, front windows.

Chief Facer said the blaze spread up the outside of the structure and into the attic, causing some damage to the second-floor unit.

Firefighters rescued a cat and some domesticated birds in putting out the fire.

Lucas County auditor’s records say the duplex was built in 1867 and is owned by Gregory L. LaCourse.

Chief Facer asked for an investigator to determine the cause of the fire.
