Lorain man accused of trying to pull gun on trooper is caught

A Lorain, Ohio, man who is accused of bolting from a state trooper during a traffic stop on Thursday was arrested Friday night at a Lake Township truck stop, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Patrick L. Hammond, 42, faces four felony counts when he appears Monday in Perrysburg Municipal Court: having weapons under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, assault on a police officer, and obstructing official business. He also was charged with possession of a defaced firearm and of not driving in marked lanes on the turnpike, according to the patrol.

During the traffic stop about 2 p.m. Thursday on the turnpike in Wood County, Hammond allegedly attempted to pull a loaded handgun on the trooper. That failed; he ran, jumped a turnpike boundary fence, and disappeared into a wooded area, the report said. Troopers recovered the weapon at the scene of the traffic stop.

After a five-hour air-and-ground search, troopers resumed normal patrols.

About 10:30 p.m. Friday, a Lake Township police officer reported seeing the suspect in the parking lot of the Petro Truck Stop off I-280. The suspect again fled on foot and attempted to hide, but a canine unit was deployed. Hammond surrendered without incident, the patrol said. Troopers took him to the Wood County jail, where he was being held in lieu of bond set at $105,500.
