Coast Guard finds missing fisherman, who wore life vest
6/23/2013MONROE — A 63-year-old Brownstown, Mich., man who had been reported missing while fishing on Lake Erie was rescued by the Coast Guard who found him clinging to his overturned boat Sunday morning.
The Coast Guard said the man, who was not identified further, reported his 16-foot boat had capsized around 5 p.m. Saturday during a squall.
The fisherman had launched from Bolles Harbor south of Monroe sometime after 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
His wife called Brownstown police when husband had not returned home, and police officers alerted the Monore County Sheriff’s Office after finding his vehicle and trailer at the boat ramp.
The Coast Guard began its search from its station in Toledo, with a helicopter from Detroit, and the Canadian Coast Guard launched a search plane from its rescue center in Trenton, Ont.
The missing fisherman, who was wearing a life vest, was spotted by another boater at 6:40 a.m. Sunday and alerted the Coast Guard.
The rescue crew brought him to Meinkes Marina at Anchor Point, Ohio, to meet with a medical crew. The Coast Guard had no word on the man’s condition.
