A 21-year-old handicapped man was hurt when fire broke out in a two-story, wood frame home at 3220 Lagrange St. near Streicher Street shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The man was alone when the fire broke out, Battalion Fire Chief Timothy Clapp said.

The condition of the victim, whose name was not released, was “very viable,” Chief Clapp said, based on information from Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Initial reports said a grandson was upstairs in the house when the fire started. Toledo firefighters put out the fire within minutes and the victim was transported to the medical center.

The fire possibly started in the kitchen, the chief said.

Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents.
