MONROE — A body found Saturday in water off a state park in northeastern Monroe County was that of a Waterford, Mich., man who disappeared after jumping into Lake Erie Wednesday, authorities said Monday.

The body of James Paul VanDosen, 36, was found about 150 feet from shore near the Pointe Mouille State Game Area, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

An autopsy performed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office ruled accidental drowning as the cause of death.

Mr. VanDosen was at a fireworks show with his girlfriend and her children at Estral Beach when he dived into the lake and swam toward one of the children who was in trouble. A boater helped the 8-year-old boy, but Mr. VanDosen struggled to stay afloat and could not be found.
