MONROE — A suburban Detroit man was in custody of the Monroe County jail, charged with robbing a gas station in Luna Pier, Mich.
The suspect, whose identity was withheld pending arraignment, was arrested within an hour of the 8:05 a.m. Sunday holdup of the Sunoco gas station at 4180 Luna Pier Rd.
Deputies said the suspect, described as a heavy-set man, pointed a gun at the clerk “while politely asking for the money.” The robber fled in a blue Ford pickup truck with an undisclosed amount of cash, investigators said.
At 8:44 a.m., a South Rockwood police officer stopped a vehicle matching the getaway truck that was northbound on I-75 at South Huron River Road.
A vehicle search uncovered money and a loaded Taurus .38 Special revolver. The money was later returned to the store, deputies said.
The driver, a 52-year-old man from Grosse Ile, was charged with armed robbery and more charges were expected to be filed, deputies said.
