CARLETON, Mich. — A Newport, Mich., man was killed Friday when his car was struck by a train as it crossed the railroad tracks on Finzel Road in Monroe County’s Exeter Township, sheriff’s deputies said.

David N. Perry, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses told deputies the car was northbound on Finzel about 1:10 p.m., when it slowed for a stop sign at the tracks, but did not stop completely before trying to cross the track. It was struck by a westbound train, which came to a stop about half a mile west of the crossing.
