Ferry’s window shatters; 2 injured

SANDUSKY — One of the Jet Express ferry boats was sidelined Sunday afternoon after a floating object, most likely a piece of driftwood, hit a wave, became airborne, and shattered one of the boat’s front windows, Lance Woodworth, Jet Express general manager, said Monday.

Mr. Woodworth said it was only the second time in 25 years he can recall a floating object hitting a wave and smashing out a window.

Two people — a 50-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, both unidentified — were taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky by ambulance about 1:30 p.m., according to the Sandusky fire department.

Mr. Woodworth said they were treated for minor cuts.

The ferry left the Sandusky dock about 1:15 p.m. with about 30 people on board. The boat returned to the dock after the window, about 3 feet by 4 feet and made of safety glass, crumbled. “It crumbled like it should have,” Mr. Woodworth said.

The remaining passengers were transferred to another vessel, he said.
