Police ID central-city shooting victim

Standing near a memorial for a 2010 homicide victim, Johnny Mays was shot in his torso Tuesday night, police said.

Mays, 23, remains hospitalized at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in serious condition, a hospital spokesman said.

The shooting outside of 351 Islington St., in Toledo's Olde Towne neighborhood, was reported to police at 9:25 p.m.

When police arrived, the victim was lying on the street, surrounded by a “large crowd” with one person tending to the victim's wound.

The group was on Islington street for a memorial for Marquise Chandler, who was shot and killed outside 349 Islington in April, 2010.

Chandler, police have said, was the leader of the Beehive Crips gang that had a stronghold on the neighborhood.

Several of the gang members were arrested last October as part of a federal indictment alleging that several of the gang members were selling guns to an undercover federal agent.

Most of the arrested Beehive gang members have been tried and convicted.

The shooting Tuesday night was described by witnesses as a drive-by, although witnesses gave police conflicting information about the type and number of suspect vehicles.
