WILLARD, Ohio — A 19-year-old man killed himself and one of the hostages he took at gunpoint in a local variety store Wednesday evening after a three-hour standoff, Willard police reported.

Gunman Shawn Schuett, whose address was not reported, was declared dead at the scene while Kim A. Kelley, whose age and address were not listed, died after being transported to Mercy Willard Hospital and then flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, according to the report.

Police went to the Family Dollar store, 403 W. Walton St., about 5:18 p.m. Wednesday after receiving several calls about the gunman, and determined he held two women in the store.

Huron County sheriff’s deputies, special-response teams from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Mansfield Police Department, and a negotiation team from the Ontario, Ohio, Police Department were summoned. Negotiations were held with Mr. Schuett until about 8:10 p.m., when one of the hostages emerged from a rear door and told authorities the other hostage had been shot.

Special-response teams entered the store and found Mr. Schuett and Ms. Kelley both on the floor with head wounds.

Authorities later determined Mr. Schuett had been dropped off at the store by a friend earlier in the afternoon. The incident remained under investigation Thursday evening.

West Walton Street is part of U.S. 224. Willard is in southern Huron County, about 75 miles southeast of Toledo.
