A midday shooting near a busy intersection Monday put Robinson Elementary School on a short-term lockdown.

One man was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for a gunshot wound to a leg, police said. It appears the bullet exited through the back of his leg, police said. The victim's name and condition were not available. He was found behind the Old West End Day Care Center at Monroe Street and Lawrence Avenue.

He told police he ran there after he and another man were shooting at one another; he cut a hand on a chain-link fence while fleeing from the other gunman.

The shooting was reported to police at 2:32 p.m. Police were searching the area of Monroe and Lawrence for a time looking for a crime scene, as the victim and a witness gave police conflicting stories about where the shootout occurred.

Police said the suspect was last seen running toward a Monroe Street liquor store.

Robinson was locked down for safety reasons for about 15 minutes, authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers program at 419-255-1111. Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
