Charges expected for Toledoan in school incident

Police expect formal charges to be brought against a Toledo man who on Monday allegedly injured a police officer during an incident at Northview High School and had to be stunned with a Taser.

Sylvania Police Capt. Rick Schnoor said Tuesday the department is still gathering statements from two of the three officers who were on the scene when Toledo resident Charles Lambert, 48, was arrested at 4:50 p.m. Monday at Northview on charges of aggravated trespass, disorderly conduct, violating the safe schools act, resisting arrest, and assault.

According to police, Mr. Lambert had been escorted off Southview High School property last week while there inquiring about a wrestling program. Captain Schnoor said Mr. Lambert does not have any children attending Sylvania schools. No weapons were found on the suspect, nor did he make any threats, he said.

Mr. Lambert first went to the Sylvania police station Monday afternoon and notified dispatchers that he intended to visit Northview to inquire about a wrestling coach. Captain Schnoor said Mr. Lambert declined to speak to police, and left the station.

Officers followed Mr. Lambert into the school and tried to stop him when he ignored questions about why he was there. He “actively resisted” and began to scream, police said. A struggle ensued and one officer’s fingers were broken, police said.

During the struggle, police used a Taser on Mr. Lambert. Students were still on school property because of sports and other after-school activities and were directed to stay in secured areas as a precaution.

Mr. Lambert and the injured officer were taken to Flower Hospital, Captain Schnoor said. Mr. Lambert was later booked into the Lucas County jail.
