The death of a man pulled from a man-made pond in Maumee on Saturday appears accidental, officials said today.

Eric Battershell, 33, drowned, said Lucas County Deputy Coroner Dr. Cynthia Beisser, who performed an autopsy on the man.

She said the official ruling is pending toxicology, but there were no signs of trauma.

Dr. Beisser could not determine how long the body was in the water before he was found citing the cold temperatures. She also did not know how Mr. Battershell came to be in the pond at the Lake View Shores Apartments off Key Street, where Mr. Battershell lived.

Maumee police said on Saturday that the body was recovered after a hours-long search of the 10-acre pond.

Mr. Battershell's family reported him missing, police said.

Maumee police spokesman Sgt. T.J. Stratton was not immediately available for comment.
