The Bowling Green Fire Division has asked residents to help keep fire hydrants near their homes from becoming buried in snow.

“Adopt a Hydrant” volunteers allow firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, officials said, rather than wasting time digging through snow to try to find buried hydrants.

Ideally, a 3-foot area around each hydrant should be cleared out, and a path from the street to the hydrant should be shoveled if needed.

Officials said neighbors should be alert to clearing hydrants in front of the homes of elderly or disabled people.
