Lucas County is in the top five in the state for illegal weapon arrests by state troopers during traffic stops in 2013, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

The county stands in a tie for fourth place with Summit County, with 20 such arrests in each. Cuyahoga County had 49 arrests, Franklin 34, and Warren 31.

The five counties account for 28 percent of the total 550 illegal weapons arrests the patrol made in 2013 in 77 of the state's 88 counties. Additionally, in 36 percent of the patrol’s illegal weapon arrests in 2013, the person was also charged with operation under the influence and 31 percent with a drug offense.

“Every day our troopers are out on the roadways taking felons out of your communities,” Lt. Jerrod Savidge, commander of the patrol's Bowling Green post, wrote in a prepared statement.
