Officials from the Metroparks of the Toledo Area have determined that skeletal remains that were found off Audubon Island in the Maumee River are from an ancient American Indian burial ground there.

Metroparks spokesman Scott Carpenter said skeletal remains are found there just about every year at the edge of the island where erosion occurs.

Authorities from the Metroparks and the Maumee Fire Department have taken a boat out to search for the remains, Mr. Carpenter said.

They will take photographs and send them to the Lucas County Coroner's Office so officials there can decide how to proceed, Mr. Carpenter said.

Perrysburg Police received the initial 911 call this morning from a fisherman who said he discovered the bones near the island.
