A teenager was shot in the shoulder during a disturbance at the Weiler Homes public housing complex in East Toledo on Sunday evening.

Police Sgt. William Wauford said Gregory Howard, 15, of East Toledo suffered a “significant injury” to his shoulder from the gunshot wound and was taken by ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Police later recovered a weapon in bushes on White Street, but until tests are conducted, it's not certain whether it was the gun involved, he said.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. during a disturbance among a group of people outside the apartment complex, Sergeant Wauford said.

Young Gregory, who was not a resident of Weiler Homes, was in the group when the shooting broke out, Sergeant Wauford said.

Investigators were trying to determine what sparked the incident. No arrests were made by late Sunday. Police were investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.

A spokesman said the hospital did not have a patient by that name.
