An on-duty Ottawa Hills police officer was injured in a traffic incident late Wednesday on Bancroft Road near Talmadge Road in the village, authorities said.

Officer Jason Schaetzke, 36, was taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he was released after treatment, according to a written statement released today by the Ohio Highway Patrol‘s post in Bowling Green.

Officer Schaetzke was standing by the driver side of his patrol car on the north side of Bancroft east of Talmadge just before midnight when he was struck by a passing sport-utility vehicle driven by Dana Taylor, 56, of 2004 Sandown Rd., according to the statement. The Ottawa Hills patrol vehicle’s emergency lights were on, troopers said. The police vehicle was not damaged.

Mr. Taylor, who was driving west on Bancroft, was not injured, according to the patrol. He was charged with aggravated vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, having an open alcoholic beverage container in his vehicle, and failure to proceed with due caution upon approaching a stationary public safety vehicle with emergency lights activated.

Mr. Taylor was arraigned today in Toledo Municipal Court and was ordered to remain in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

It was unknown whether Mr. Taylor wore a seatbelt, according to the statement.
