The Sylvania Township Fire Department plans to hire seven part-time firefighter-paramedics.
Although Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski said the new hires, now in training, will bring to 10 his department’s part-time firefighter-paramedic work force that serves the township and the city of Sylvania. They will be paid $13 per hour.
Chief Kowalski said hiring part-time employees allows the department to assess the new employees’ compatibility with the fire department. Part-timers fill in when full-time staff is on leave for sickness or vacations, and allow the department to avoid paying overtime.
The fire department has $96,000 budgeted this year for part-time employees.
