Fremont checkpoint yields 3 DUI arrests
7/27/2014FREMONT, Ohio — Three drivers were arrested and charged with impaired driving from among 11 vehicles diverted for investigation during a sobriety checkpoint Friday evening on Rawson Avenue, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.
Troopers also made arrests for open containers in vehicles, marijuana possession, and felony improper handling of a concealed weapon while intoxicated, troopers from the patrol’s Fremont post said. A dispatcher could not give the total number of arrests. Troopers checked 389 vehicles between 9 p.m. and midnight, while Fremont police and Sandusky County Sheriff’s deputies provided road support.
Troopers also conducted saturation patrols in the surrounding area between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, with 54 traffic stops yielding seven more drunken-driving arrests, the patrol said.
On average, intoxicated driving accounts for about one third of traffic crashes in Sandusky County and was involved in 33 injury crashes and one fatality last year in the county, the patrol said. So far this year, 174 people have been arrested in Sandusky County for impaired driving.
