Woman facing assault charge for scuffle with officer
6/19/2017A scuffle between a central-city woman and a Toledo police officer sent them both to the hospital Sunday.
Shawnta Jones, 26, of the 3000 block of Maplewood Avenue, faces a pending charge for assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony, according to a Toledo police report.
Ms. Jones was walking in the middle of Superior and Locust streets at approximately 7:25 a.m. Sunday when two Toledo police officers stopped to see if she was OK, according to a Toledo police report. The officers asked her to walk on the sidewalk, but Ms. Jones continued to walk in the street.
The officers approached Ms. Jones and she began to pull away and attempt to fight with the officers, according to the police report.
She scratched one of the officers with her fingernails, causing a number of deep scratches, police said. She is also accused of kicking him in the legs, according to a document filed in Toledo Municipal Court.
After officers handcuffed Ms. Jones and placed her into a police cruiser, she continued to fight and kick, according to the report. She was transported to the Lucas County jail, where the fighting continued.
One of the officers was treated at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. He is not anticipated to miss any work, according to the report.
Ms. Jones was transported and admitted to Mercy Health St. Vincent because it appears she may have used synthetic cathinones, commonly known as bath salts, which may have contributed to her behavior, according to the report. Her condition was not immediately known. A court date has not been scheduled for her. She was not listed as an inmate in the jail as of Monday morning.
