  • Bullets struck two men outside an East Toledo carryout Tuesday evening, police said.

Toledo Police Department Sgt. Steve Zarecki said the shooting occurred at the intersection of Earl and Rogers streets at about 6:30 p.m.

“They were standing on the sidewalk when shots were exchanged, and two men ended up shot,” he said from the location Tuesday night.

Police originally found no victims at the Earl Street location, but — less then two miles away — officers and rescue crews were dispatched to the 2400 block of Navarre Avenue in Oregon, where they found a vehicle stopped and two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Oregon Police Sgt. E.J. Materni said the men were shot in East Toledo and were trying to reach Mercy St. Charles Hospital by a private vehicle when they got stuck in traffic and were forced to call the police.

Sergeant Zarecki said the men were transported by emergency crews to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where their conditions had not been reported. He did not say how many people were involved in the incident near the carryout, or whether the victims were involved in the actual shooting.

The incident Tuesday night was at least the fourth shooting in recent days that injured or killed people within city limits.

Dakoda Rogers, 25, died in a hospital after he was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound in a vehicle in South Toledo Monday. Also Monday, Brad Bollinger, of the 800 block of Berry Street, called 911 shortly before 11 p.m. and said he was shot  in the hip near Nevada and Main streets in East Toledo — less than a mile from the location of Tuesday night’s shooting.

On Saturday, Jerry McNeal, 31, was shot and died in a hospital after officers were dispatched to reports of a shooting in the 1800 block of Bigelow Street.

Mr. Rogers’ death was the 38th homicide so far in 2017 in the Toledo metro area, with 37 of them occurring within city limits.

Toledo police officials could not be immediately reached Tuesday night with questions about whether any of the shootings could be related.
