In 2003, someone broke into a couple’s West Toledo auto parts business and shot them both.

Richard McCune, then 44, was shot in the leg. But his wife, Cathy McCune, 43, was fatally shot in the back of the head.

Fifteen years later, her case remains unsolved.

Toledo police plan to bring awareness to Mrs. McCune’s case on the 15th anniversary of her death through social media. Through their accounts, police will post only content related to this case Tuesday.

Toledo Police Department Sgt. Kevan Toney, who primarily handles the police’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, will be updating the department’s social media platforms throughout the day with information, such as what Mrs. McCune was doing the day she was killed.

Sergeant Toney said he hopes the posts will shed light on her case and other cold cases.

“The Toledo Police Department continues to seek justice for all homicide victims and their families,” said Toledo Police Chief George Kral. “The Cold Case Unit has had significant success over the years in solving past homicides, and I am proud of their work. We need the assistance of the public in solving crime, and it is my hope that the extra attention to cold cases may generate leads for investigators.”

After dinner, the McCunes stopped at the business, A-1 Auto Parts, 4105 N. Detroit Ave., to pick up paperwork and check on the water pipes. Mrs. McCune was in the office, while her husband went to check the pipes.

Investigators said a masked man entered through the unlocked front door.

Mr. McCune reported hearing a couple of loud pops. When he went to check he found a man near his wife.

Mr. McCune was then shot.

The suspect was described as Hispanic or black with a light complexion, 6 feet to 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing more than 240 pounds. He may have fled the parking lot in a dark colored, midsize car, possibly south on North Detroit.

Anyone with information regarding Mrs. McCune’s case, or other cold cases, should contact the Crime Stoppers program at 419-255-1111.
