MONROE — The body of a missing Monroe man was located Thursday about a week after he was reported to have fallen through Lake Erie ice while riding his all-terrain vehicle.

Derik Bondy, 40, fell through the ice off Lakeshore Drive, near Nealson Drive, in Frenchtown Township on the evening of Jan. 10. An immediate search located an area of open water in the ice but was then suspended because of dangerous conditions.

A joint search involving the Coast Guard, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, and Monroe County Ambulance recovered Mr. Bondy’s body Thursday after about six hours using underwater sonar and an underwater vehicle.

The body was located in about 10 feet of water, the sheriff’s office said in a written statement, and was taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The same crew had searched unsuccessfully for eight hours Wednesday.
