Democrat enters race for seat in 5th District

4/27/2002

Roger C. Anderson, a two-term Bowling Green city councilman and retired chairman of Bowling Green State University's political science department, has been endorsed by the Lucas County Democratic Party as a write-in candidate in the 5th Congressional District.

He is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the May 7 primary. He declared his intention to run for office too late to qualify to appear on the ballot.

Should he receive 50 votes in the election, his name will be printed onto the Nov. 5 general election ballot.

“Control of the U.S. House of Representatives is going to turn on a small handful of seats across the entire nation. It is, therefore, imperative that Democrats and independent thinking voters in northwest Ohio be afforded a meaningful choice in their vote for Congress,” Mr. Anderson said in a news release. “We have an obligation to keep our two-party system healthy and vigorous.”

Mr. Anderson worked at BGSU for 30 years.

In the Republican primary election for the seat, U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor (R., Old Fort) is challenged by state Rep. Rex Damschroder of Fremont.

A third candidate is poised to enter the 5th District race in November. John “Jack” Green of Napoleon has announced plans to file as an independent candidate in the race. He has scheduled a news conference for Friday in Bowling Green to detail his intentions.
