UT had asked Snow to lecture as visiting exec
12/9/2002John W. Snow, the man President Bush reportedly has chosen to replace Paul O'Neill as secretary of the Treasury, is a Toledo native who graduated from the University of Toledo in 1962.
Mr. Snow, 63, was born here, the son of attorney William D. Snow, and Catherine Snow, a retired school teacher. Both of his parents are deceased.
He was in the area earlier this year to speak at Tiffin University's 114th commencement.
Joe Brennan, UT executive director of public relations, said last night that the university had recently contacted Mr. Snow about being a visiting executive for the College of Business Administration.
People who serve as visiting executives spend time on campus, speaking to classes and advising students. Mr. Brennan said he did not know how far the talks had advanced with Mr. Snow, and said it would be a coup for the college to secure a treasury secretary as a visiting executive.
“That would be very exciting, but you don't know how busy he would be in his new job,” he said.
Mr. Brennan said Mr. Snow “hasn't been closely involved” with UT.
He also said this could be the first time a UT graduate serves in a cabinet-level position, but he needs to do more research on the issue.
Mr. Snow, known as a strong advocate for deregulation, spoke in Toledo in 1985 at a forum called the “Great Freight Debate.” .
He attended the former Nazareth Hall Military School near Grand Rapids, Ohio, and Gilmour Academy in Cleveland. Mr. Snow received a bachelor's degree in economics from UT and a doctor of philosophy in economics degree from the University of Virginia in in 1965. He received a law degree from George Washington University in Washington in 1967.
His father, William D. Snow, was a tax attorney in Toledo for 38 years; he died in 1982. His grandmother, Sue D. Snow, was a principal of Sherman Elementary School.
Mr. Snow and his wife Caroline, live in Richmond, Va., and have a 20-year-old son.
