Ex-mayor of Findlay wants old job back

5/2/2003

FINDLAY - City Councilman John Sausser marked his 92nd birthday this week by showing he has no intention of leaving local politics.

Mr. Sausser went to the Hancock County Board of Elections on Wednesday, filing petitions to run in November as an independent in the Findlay mayoral election.

“I thought I better file,” Mr. Sausser said yesterday from his business, Sausser Steel Co. “I can't say the present candidates will return the city to normalcy.”

Mr. Sausser, mayor from 1963-67 and 1971-75, is the only independent to file so far for the fall mayoral election. In the past, Mr. Sausser has run as a Democrat, once a write-in candidate, but never as an independent.

Mr. Sausser said he has too many concerns about the city to list, but one is the city's installation of and assessment for sidewalks against the wishes of some residents.

The candidate said he expects to continue working as a lawyer and at his steel company while he campaigns for the job.

“I just want to get the city back on track,” Mr. Sausser said.
