McCloskey signals start of campaign for council

Bob McCloskey, Toledo's District 3 councilman, kicked off his re-election campaign yesterday with a dozen friends gathered at Housing East Redevelopment Corp. headquarters on Front Street in East Toledo, touting his service to the city during the last three decades.

Mr. McCloskey, 58, is serving his 10th year as the councilman representing east and a portion of South Toledo. He is running for what would be his final four-year term on council, should he win re-election in November.

He pointed to business growth, revitalized housing, and public works projects in his district as evidence of his work.

“It's been a long, hard process, but we are turning things around,” he said of the district that he said commonly was overlooked by City Hall in the past.

He also highlighted his work as chairman of the council committee overseeing parks, on which he spearheaded an effort to replace playground equipment in many parks throughout the city.

“We are working to keep East Toledo businesses and neighborhoods vibrant, to make East Toledo a good place to work and to live,” he said, adding that a new library branch and senior center in South Toledo will help residents there.

Mr. McCloskey, a Democrat, is challenged by Republican Tiffany Adamski, a 24-year-old college instructor from South Toledo.

All six of Toledo's district councilmen are up for election this year. A nonpartisan primary election is scheduled for Sept. 9, followed by the general election on Nov. 4.
