Police officer is among filers for March primary

1/3/2004

Perrysburg police Sgt Mark Wasylyshyn, who successfully fought City Council over the right to seek election as Wood County sheriff, has filed petitions to challenge incumbent John Kohl in the Republican primary March 2.

City Council voted in November to support a measure that would allow Perrysburg employees to run for elected office outside the city, removing a barrier that had stymied Sergeant Wasylyshyn s bid.

He began campaigning in the spring to unseat Sheriff Kohl, but suspended the effort in late September after city officials advised him his candidacy appeared to violate state law.

Wood County s other contested race in the GOP primary involves the engineer s office. Raymond Huber of Perrysburg, who works in the engineer s office, faces Matthew Tewers of Northwood.

On the Democratic side, Patrick Ng of Bowling Green is not seeking re-election to City Council. Wood County Engineer Tony Allion is not seeking re-election.

With Fulton County s longtime county prosecutor William Swigart not running for re-election, a primary race has emerged between Republicans Roger Nagel and Jeffrey Robinson, both of Wauseon.

No Democrats have filed for the prosecutor s post.

Mr. Robinson is law director for the city of Wauseon; Mr. Nagel is an assistant county prosecutor.

The county commissioner races for the Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 terms have drawn interest from four GOP hopefuls, but none from any Democrats.

For the Fulton County term beginning Jan. 2, Dean Genter of Archbold faces Darrel Garmenn of Wauseon, and for the Jan. 3 term, Paul Barnaby of Metamora will challenge Ronald Lumbrezer of Lyons. Mr. Genter and Mr. Barnaby are incumbents.

Beverly Schlosser, who fills the treasurer s post by appointment, is seeking election to the seat. She is challenged by Brett Kolb. Both are from Wauseon.

In Ottawa County, the only contested race is for engineer. Democrats David Brunkhorst faces Arnold Stemen.

No hometowns were given by the board of elections.

The Henry County Common Pleas Court Democratic primary will feature a challenge by Napoleon attorney Gerald Laver to incumbent Judge Keith Muehlfeld of Napoleon.

Two Republicans are seeking the Henry County Commissioner term that begins Jan. 3, 2005. Incumbent Richard Bennett of Napoleon faces James Junge of Holgate. Mr. Junge is completing his term as Holgate mayor.

In Erie County, veteran Common Pleas Judge Ann Maschari of Sandusky will be challenged by fellow Democrat Tygh Tone of Huron for the term that begins Jan. 1.

For the Erie County Common Pleas term that begins Jan. 2, 2005, two Democrats, Nancy Ogden-Dellisanti of Huron and Kevin Zeiher of Sandusky, will face off in the primary.

Two seats on the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeals are up for grabs.

Incumbent Democrat Mark Pietrykowski is unopposed for re-election to his seat, while Democrat William Skow will face Republican Robert Christiansen for the seat being vacated by Judge Richard Knepper.

Mr. Christiansen s term on the trial court is expiring. He chose to run for the appeals court rather than his current seat.
