Fulton County: BARNABY VS. LUMBREZER

Paul Barnaby, a retired agriculture teacher who turned 65 last week, is promoting himself as a full-time Fulton County commissioner in his run for re-election against an employed challenger half his age.

R.J. Lumbrezer, 33, a surveying manager with R.D. Zande & Associates, Inc., a Toledo engineering and surveying firm, is the father of four children, age 6 and under.

Mr. Lumbrezer of Lyons counters that his work hours are flexible and he has found time for public service for years as a Royalton Township trustee and member of the county regional planning commission and Republican central committee. He is president of the Evergreen Youth Association this year and was president of the Lyons Athletic Boosters the past two years.

The commissioners salary is $40,300, whether or not they hold another job.

Mr. Lumbrezer said his surveying experience would be valuable on the board of commissioners . He was once employed in the county engineer s office .

He promises to work on an economic development plan for the county that he says could help receive more grants.

Mr. Barnaby has announced campaign goals to implement revised comprehensive development plans and use geographic information systems to show routes for emergency vehicles.

He is the county s representative to numerous boards including the 911 advisory board, Northwest Ohio Area Office on Aging, Four County Solid Waste District, Fulton County Health Department and Soil and Water Conservation District, and Ohio State University Extension advisory board.

Mr. Barnaby retired in 2000 from Evergreen High School; he taught vocational agriculture..
