Former councilman joins race to be Perrysburg mayor

3/9/2005

Kim Klewer, a former Perrysburg city councilman, has announced that he will run for mayor of the city in November.

Mr. Klewer recently declared his candidacy at the Northern Wood County Republican Club. To get his name on the ballot, he must submit a petition to the Wood County Board of Elections with at least 82 signatures by July 5.

"I feel the mayor's office is in need of new leadership, statesmanship, and management," Mr. Klewer said in a prepared statement. "Also needed is improved communication to council and citizens, less politics, and a better overall relationship with city council."

Mr. Klewer served two terms on council from 1996 until 2003, when he failed to win re-election. He has lived in Perrysburg since 1977, he said.

He is president and owner of Asset Protection Corporation, a firm based in Toledo that provides security systems.

Mr. Klewer is one of four candidates planning to run for mayor. The other three are Councilman Thomas Mackin; Nelson Evans, former Perrysburg police chief; and Matt Hawkins, a graduate student at Bowling Green State University.

A primary election will winnow the field to two candidates.
