Absentee-vote deadlines are near in some Michigan districts

2/23/2006

Michigan voters in sections of northern Monroe County and in the Litchfield Community School District in Hillsdale County have until this weekend to request an absentee ballot for Tuesday's special election.

The Michigan secretary of state's office said the deadline to apply by mail is 2 p.m. Saturday. Residents who want to vote an absentee ballot in person must do so at their local clerk's office by 4 p.m. Monday.

In Monroe County, voters in the Jefferson and Airport school districts will cast ballots on a pair of funding issues.

Jefferson is seeking a 2.5-mill, five-year levy for transportation. It will cost taxpayers owning a house with a value of $100,000 about $250 a year. Airport is seeking passage of an 0.85-mill, two-year sinking fund to raise about $1 million for roof renovation at the high school and Wagar Middle School.

Two township supervisors in Monroe County are facing recall questions Tuesday as well. Ash Township's Robin Carmack and London Township's Kris Neuvirth will try to convince voters they should keep the jobs to which they were elected in 2004.

Voters in the Litchfield School District are being asked whether they want to recall two remaining board members, James Friedline and Randy Coplin. Recall petitions had been filed against four board members, but two have since resigned.
