GOP endorses Montgomery for attorney general
3/25/2006The Ohio GOP's State Central Committee yesterday voted to endorse Betty Montgomery's campaign for attorney general.
Ms. Montgomery, the state auditor who served two terms as attorney general from 1995 through 2002, entered the race in January after quitting the Republican primary for governor.
The Ohio GOP's State Central Committee voted to suspend its own rules so it could endorse a nonincumbent candidate in the primary for attorney general. Ms. Montgomery received 52 votes in favor of her endorsement, four people abstained, and no one voted against her.
Ms. Montgomery will face state Sen. Tim Grendell of Chesterland in the May 2 GOP primary. She has faced criticism in recent months for her failure to take quick action to respond to the state's failed rare-coin venture with former Toledo-area GOP fund-raiser Tom Noe.
