GOP backs candidate for at-large council run

8/29/2006

The Lucas County Republican Party's screening committee last night interviewed three candidates for the Toledo City Council at-large seat up for election Nov. 7 and voted to recommend Dave Schulz, an unsuccessful 2005 council candidate, to run to fill the seat, said Rob Reichert, interim chairman of the Lucas County Republican Party.

The other candidates were Dave Davison, a retired Toledo police officer, and Jonathon Rodebaugh, a quality manager for a manufacturing company.

Mr. Reichert said the executive committee plans to meet after the Sept. 8 filing deadline to vote on the endorsement.

"I'm very happy with the news," Mr. Schulz said last night. "It helps me get involved with the party."

Mr. Schulz said he is a traditional Republican because he is for limited government and fiscal responsibility, and he hopes to bring his creativity and purchasing background to council.

The seat was vacated in May by Democrat Bob McCloskey, who was convicted of bribery in state and federal courts.

The interim appointee is Democrat Lourdes Santiago, who is running for the position and is endorsed by the Lucas County Democratic Party.

Also running are unendorsed Democrats Bob Vasquez and Joe McNamara.
