Wood, Williams set February elections

11/29/2006

Wood and Williams counties appear to be among the only area counties with special elections on Feb. 6.

Wood County will have polls open only in the Rossford Exempted Village School District, where the board of education is asking voters to replace two identical 7.9-mill, five-year operating levies.

The current levies, which expire at the end of 2007, cost the owner of a $100,000 home just under $400 a year, according to officials at the Wood County Auditor's Office.

If both levies are replaced, such a homeowner would pay an extra $82 annually.

In Williams County, a petition for a question of surrendering the village of Alvordton's corporate powers and reverting to township rule will be considered when the board of elections meets Dec. 12.

Village Fiscal Clerk Beth Rediger filed a petition with 34 signatures last week. They have not yet been checked by the board; 26 valid signatures are needed to put the issue on the February ballot.

Alvordton, population 298 according to U.S. Census figures from last year, is in northeastern Williams County's Millcreek Township a few miles from the Fulton County line.

The petitions were circulated because some village residents have long felt the community is not getting any advantage from being a village and is spending money to operate a village hall and government, Councilman Simon Mohr said.

Monday was the filing deadline for the February ballot in Ohio.

In Michigan, the filing deadline is Dec. 15 for its Feb. 27 special election.
