Genoa voters to decide if levy stays to run schools

GENOA Voters in the Gen oa Area Local School District will decide in November whether to keep a levy on the books to pay for operating expenses.

School board members voted 4-0 yesterday morning to ask the Ottawa County Board of Elections to place a 3.9-mill, three-year operating levy renewal on the Nov. 6 ballot. Board member Thomas Scheanwald was absent.

If renewed, the levy is estimated to raise $588,240 a year for the Ottawa County district, and will continue to cost $119 annually for the owner of a $100,000 home, Genoa Treasurer Bill Nye said.

Funding from the levy pays for general operating expenses, which include teachers salaries, fringe benefits, and school supplies.
