Vote-drive letters cause anger in Michigan

LANSING - An independent group that has sent voter registration forms to Michigan residents who have died or moved and even to their pets is causing a ruckus with the Secretary of State's Office.

Voters have sent in the registrations accompanied by angry notes and sarcastic comments.

One came back marked in large block letters, "No such person."

"While this effort may have been well-intentioned, it has resulted in a great deal of voter confusion," Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said Wednesday in a news release. "The mailing list used by the group is of questionable quality, fraught with errors, inaccuracies, and out-of-date information."

A call seeking comment was left with the group that sent the registration forms, Women's Voices. Women Vote.

The Washington-based organization says on its Web site that its goal is to motivate the 20 million unmarried American women who did not cast a ballot in the last election to register and vote in November, 2008.
