Ohio, Michigan voters head to the polls today

Voters in Ohio and Michigan will go to the polls today for special elections in Ohio and primaries in Michigan.

Polls in Ohio will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., while they will be open in Michigan from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Five northwest Ohio school districts have levies on today's ballot, asking voters for funds for everything from district operations to new buildings.

In the Anthony Wayne Local School District, voters will be asked to decide on two, five-year 3.3-mill levies.

The levies would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $101 per year.

This is the third time in less than 18 months the district has asked for voters' support.

In the Lake Local School District, voters will decide on a 5.63-mill continuing operating levy. The levy would neither increase nor decrease taxes, according to the district.

Voters in the Liberty Center Local Schools in Henry County will cast ballots on a 4.98-mill levy to pay for renovating and building new facilities for elementary and middle school students. The issue would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $152 annually.

Other schools with construction-related levies on the ballot include Liberty-Benton Local School District in Hancock County, where voters will decide on a 5.97-mill levy to renovate and build new elementary and middle school facilities.

The levy would cost $183 annually for the owner of a $100,000 home.

In Pike-Delta-York Local School District in Fulton County, residents will weigh in on a 2.5-mill bond issue and 1.8-mill levy, both for 28 years, and a 0.5-mill 23-year facility maintenance levy to build a new elementary school and make major renovations to Delta High School and repairs at Delta Middle School.

The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $151 annually for 23 years, and $135 for the remaining five years.

In nonschool-related elections, Perrysburg voters will approve or deny a 1.5-mill replacement levy for the Way Public Library. The levy, which would be used to pay higher utility and other costs as well as hire an additional librarian, would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $15 more a year, with the tax increasing from $31 to $46 annually.

In Michigan, voters will choose candidates in several primary election contests.

In Lenawee County, voters must narrow the field of candidates from the three Republicans and five Democrats who are running for county sheriff in November.

In Monroe County, voters will weigh in on a sheriff's race as well.

Republican voters in Bedford Township will also choose four candidates from a field of six for the office of township trustee.

Four trustees will be elected in November.

Republicans in Bedford Township can also cast their ballots for township clerk.

Various millage requests also will appear on the ballot in Monroe and Lenawee counties.
