6 Democrats, independent seek city post

Six people applied to the Lucas County Democratic Party for endorsement for the Toledo City Council seat soon to be vacated by Councilman Mark Sobczak by Friday's party deadline, and the leader of a newly formed political party has also announced his interest in the seat.

The applicants for the party's backing are Steve Steel, Art Jones, Terry Shankland, Adam Martinez, Schylar Meadows, and Terry Biel, party Chairman Ron Rothenbuhler said.

Mr. Steel, a member of the Toledo Board of Education; Mr. Martinez, owner of a lawn-care business; Mr. Shankland, a caterer, and Mr. Biel, a University of Toledo graduate student, all have declared their candidacy for city council.

Mr. Jones is a former city councilman, while Ms. Meadows is a local radio and television personality.

A recommendation will be made by the party's executive committee.

Another person who's expressed interest in the post is Kevin Milliken, a former radio and television journalist and member of the political coalition Teamwork Toledo. He said now is the time for an independent voice.

"I would bring a fresh perspective, fresh ideas, and a fresh approach to the current fiscal crisis facing our city government. Additionally, there would be little learning curve to such an appointment, as I have the knowledge and background as to how city council operates," he said.

Mr. Sobczak, council president, submitted his resignation Thursday, effective June 23. Council will have 30 days to make an appointment.
