First lady hosts lunch with 'celebrity mentors' during Detroit visit

DETROIT — Michelle Obama brought a group of about two dozen VIPs to Detroit to have lunch with a couple hundred high school students from the region.

The event Wednesday at the Detroit Institute of Arts was part of the first lady's ongoing effort to push for more mentoring experiences for young people across the nation.

Obama spoke earlier in the day at a rally attended by thousands at Wayne State University's football stadium.

At the DIA lunch, Obama told the students that when she looked at them, she saw herself as a young person growing up in Chicago.

Film director Spike Lee and former University of Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr were among the "celebrity mentors" who dined with the students.
