A Toledo lawyer has gained two important endorsements for appointment to an open seat on the U.S. District Court in Toledo.

Ohio U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D) and George Voinovich (R) announced Wednesday that they would recommend Jeffrey Helmick to replace Judge James Carr, who went on senior status June 1.

They said the recommendation was based on the work of a 17-member judicial advisory commission.

The appointment now moves to the desk of President Obama, who will make the nomination that must be confirmed by the Senate.

Mr. Helmick received his law degree from Ohio State University. He is a principal in the law firm Gamso, Helmick & Hoolahan in Toledo.
