State Rep. Edna Brown (D., Toledo) said Wednesday she would work to support any efforts to make a Wrangler-based Jeep pickup in Toledo.

Auto industry observers speculated that Chrysler Group LLC might consider building such a vehicle after a presentation last month by company executives.

A logical place to build the pickup would be Chrysler's Toledo Assembly complex, which already makes all the Jeep Wranglers in the world.

"As a member of the state Senate, I will meet with the legislative leadership from northwestern Ohio and work with the governor to keep the lines of communication open with the Chrysler leadership to encourage further investment and expansion at the Jeep complex here in North Toledo," Ms. Brown said, according to a copy of her remarks.

Ms. Brown is running for re-election against Tom Waniewski, a Republican and Toledo City Council member. Mr. Waniewski said Wednesday he too could support local production of the pickup after seeking input from Bruce Baumhower, president of United Auto Workers Local 12, which represents Jeep employees.
