The purpose of the gathering is to congratulate the Lucas County Republican Party at its downtown headquarters for making more telephone calls on a single day than any other phone-banking operation in the country.

The party's Victory Center in Lucas County made 18,685 calls on Sept. 25 from its phone bank. The John Kasich for Governor campaign said that total was a national record. Mr. Kasich is running against incumbent Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland in the election Tuesday.

Rob Nichols, spokesman for Mr. Kasich's campaign, said the number of calls logged by Lucas County GOP volunteers on Saturday - dubbed "Super Saturday" by the Republican National Committee - broke a record set in Illinois by about 1,000 calls.
