U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) will abstain from eating Tuesday along with others in Congress to show support for America's poor and hungry and to protest cuts proposed by House Republicans.

Miss Kaptur said she and 26 other members are answering a call of former Ohio Congressman Rep. Tony Hall, who represented the Dayton area from 1979 to 2002, and who in 1993 went on a 22-day fast. Mr. Hall also served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.

The fast is also being observed by some religious and nonprofit food organizations.
