COLUMBUS — A newspaper's analysis finds Ohio's new Republican administration is paying its employees slightly less than the former Democratic one.

The Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday that current Gov. John Kasich has achieved the savings even while paying more money to his top-earning staffers.

The newspaper's look at salary data supplied by the Kasich administration and the Department of Administrative Services also found the Republican governor pays less to his lowest level employees than did his Democratic predecessor, Ted Strickland.

The Dispatch says Kasich's total payroll is lower than Strickland's by about $38,500, or 0.5 percent.

Spokesman Rob Nichols says the bottom line is that Kasich is doing what he said he'd do: achieving more work with fewer people and at a lower cost.
